General Manager & Chief Winemaker – Katnook Estate, Coonawarra

In 1896, Coonawarra’s founder, John Riddoch produced this internationally famous region’s first vintage in the Katnook winery. Katnook’s fame commenced in the 1970s, since when its wines have won many awards and established two of its top Cabernets in the Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine.
In 2018, Henkell Freixenet Group, the world’s biggest sparkling wine producer, acquired Katnook and has recently announced that Katnook Estate will join the forefront of Henkell Freixenet’s portfolio of iconic international wineries including: Schloss Johannisberg (Germany), Alfred Gratien (Champagne) and Gloria Ferrer (California).
Henkell Freixenet has decided to develop Katnook Estate as an outstanding and innovative Coonawarra producer with ‘best of region’ status. The existing winery is modern and well-equipped, enabling a detailed focus on individual vineyard sites within the Katnook’s 160 ha estate. The company’s product range is based principally on contemporary expressions of Coonawarra’s traditional cool-climate varieties.
Henkell Freixenet Group is seeking an outstanding Chief Winemaker with entrepreneurial spirit who, as General Manager of the Katnook Estate will lead and oversee the company’s wine-making strategy, operations, and quality execution. The GM will directly report to the German headquarters and will liaise with the company’s Melbourne-based office and Sales Director.
Central to the role is defining and evolving appropriate wine styles to command domestic and international recognition and leading Katnook’s emphasis on innovation.
This requires leading, inspiring and mentoring the wine-making team, a commitment to continuous improvement of quality, maintaining and implementing best practice in wine-making, production and operating systems. Effective internal and external communication skills and the ability to represent the company at a senior level are essential.
To meet these requirements, the successful candidate will certainly have: a tertiary qualification in Oenology, or a relevant related qualification; wine-making experience in a comparable leadership role which included all aspects of the production of ultra-premium wines. In addition to proven wine-making skills, a thoroughly commercial approach and excellent knowledge of international wine markets, wine styles and businesses is required.
